Holiday renovations
Holiday renovations

Holiday weather positively inspires us to make some changes - that applies to our nearest surroundings. We’re more likely to do renovations and repairs. However, you must remember to be properly prepared as good preparation is your key to success. The most important things are - your budget planned in details and background check of the company you’re going to hire to have the renovations done.

Renovation involves expenses and time consuming tasks that are not always predictable. Before we begin we should write everything down - all the necessary materials and their costs. Here are some key points:

1. Plan everything

Start by setting a work plan. Next choose your start date. Try to describe what needs to be done and what products you’ll need (eg tiles or wallpapers). Check their availability in stores. It might turn out that patterns or models of your choice are not available and you’ll have to wait for even a few months to get them while failing to provide your team with necessary materials will extend the renovation itself. It is also very important to determine the correct order of all works.

2. Find some feedback and plan your budget

Once you have a plan for renovation, calculate the exact costs. Remember that if you have a fixed budget it’s best to stick with it and try not to exceed it. The best thing to do it is to set up a reserve in case you come across some unpredicted expenses. To reduce the cost of repairs you should consider doing some of the work by yourself and having only more complex tasks done by professional. Speaking of professionals - you should carefully choose your labour. Where to start to find the right one? First, you should ask around with your friends or relatives if they can refer anyone to you. You should be very careful when searching over the Internet or in newspapers. Always check where the company you’re after is based, if they have a website, try to google them to find out more. Online comments are a valuable source of information.
Before signing a contract with the professional you are willing to hire, he should first come to your premises to see what needs to be done and make a rough calculation of his own. As a result you minimise the risk of future misunderstandings.
You shouldn’t also neglect checking if your contractor is listed in any debtors database.

Next you might want to use the advice of architects. If your budget is limited and you have a whole house or apartment to renovate you could consult some interior design expert. Kitchens and bathrooms are known to be the most challenging when it comes to arranging. Using an expert’s advise is a good choice as he’ll guide you how to plan your interiors and also should be able to provide you with some uncommon solutions. It can be also helpful when creating your shopping list as many of them are offered discounts at manufacturers and retailers and this can also help you save some of your budget money.

3. Hire a professional

When you decide to hire a professional it’s necessary to prepare a contract which should consist of: start and completion dates, fines for delays and advance payments as well.
It is a good solution to go shopping together with your hired team of professionals. You decide together what are the most urgent products at the moment e.g. brushes, adhesives, primers, paints and so on and you are assured all bought items are for your renovation.
It’s also a good practice to have an agreement with the contractor that the final payment is made only after he’s done his work as agreed in the contract and you won't have any objections to this fulfilment.

4. Don’t forget some expenses

When you’re setting up a budget, make sure it includes all the necessary materials. It is crucial especially when you’re planning to do all the work yourself. Don’t forget about hiring a skip for your waste. This can be a significant cost.
Keep in mind that during renovation you don’t need to replace everything as some items might just need a refreshing touch just by applying a new paint colour or converting some old furniture.
Try to avoid temporary solutions - unless it’s a minor defect that only spoils visual effect - sometimes it’s better to spend more and make it properly than use a temporary solution as this in fact may lead to more serious faults and cost you even more.
